Veronique B. For this bedtime conversation with little A, my six-year old son:
- It's not important (he says, as we were discussing our tastes in mattresses, hard or soft, or no mattress at all, his current choice)
- What is important? (I ask)
- Nothing. Nothing is important, in life.
- Nothing? not even love?
- A little. But we are all going to die in the end, one cannot not die, so nothing is important. If we take care of our body or if we don't, we are going to die. What is important is the way we feel about our life.
- You mean, whether we're happy or unhappy?
- Yes, if we feel good or bad about our life, that matters.
- And how do you feel?
- Sometimes good and sometimes bad, like everybody else. People feel bad when there are things like arguments, and they fell good when they have a project that they would really really like to do.
- Did you talk about all this at school?
- No, it just came into my head, I thought about it.
Earlier on I said I was grateful for philosophers...
I know I'm partial to my own children, but WOW! Thank God for children! Who else is going to put things into perspective for me with such clearcut clarity, no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is kind of language? I am so blessed to have these two children in my life, and so grateful that they are willing to share so much with me.
I love this life.
